■Tailor Toyo Vietnam Jacket, Sukajan, VIETNAM-MAP, Mid-1960s, Embroidered Cotton Jumper, TT15892-119

This piece reproduces a jacket brought back to America by a soldier stationed at the US military base in Pleiku, Vietnam, in the mid-1960s.
The embroidery features a classic Betojan design: a tiger on the right chest, the character "福" (fuku/fortune) on the left chest, dragons on both sleeves, and a map of Vietnam on the back.
While many vintage Betojans have coarse embroidery, this model reproduces high-density, excellent quality embroidery.
As with vintage pieces, the cuffs feature buttons designed to resemble old coins.

VIETNAM JACKET

Similar to the Sukajan which originated in post-war Japan, the souvenir jacket born during the Vietnam War from the 1960s to the 1970s is commonly known as the Betojan.
Two main types of fabric were used: cotton twill or camouflage poncho liners, and the designs were embroidered with thick, matte colored threads.
