In the 1960s, the U.S. military procurement headquarters in Japan chose to procure camouflage uniforms in Japan. This was because Japan possessed advanced printing technology and
speedy productivity, and was also excellent in terms of cost. As a result of leaving the patterns to the factory sites
around Japan, countless variations of the tiger stripe pattern were born.
Many of the early tiger stripe patterns were made in Japan, but some were made by sending the fabric to Okinawa for sewing, or
produced in Thailand and the surrounding areas of Vietnam in the later stages of the Vietnam War. March 1965 was the year the United States intervened in the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam War was also a battle against an invisible enemy hidden in the dense jungle. The Viet Cong (National Liberation Front of South Vietnam) would approach
silently, launch small-scale attacks repeatedly, and set traps in the jungle and rivers.
The tiger stripe was born with the purpose of blending in with the Vietnamese jungle.
The small pocket on the sleeve was used to store cigarettes or small bottles of water purification tablets, which were essential for water collected in areas with poor water quality.

There are actual examples of tiger patterns being overdyed (post-dyed) during the Vietnam War.
Since tiger stripes were not originally government-issued items, soldiers could handle them relatively freely.
You can enjoy the process of the tiger pattern emerging more clearly as you wear and wash it.

<WILLIAM GIBSON COLLECTION>
The BLACK MA-1 was the first product Buzz Rickson's produced when the brand celebrated its 10th anniversary. In William Gibson's globally renowned novel "Pattern Recognition," the phrase "Buzz Rickson's Black MA-1" is engraved, referring to the jacket worn by the protagonist. Emerging from that novel, the actual Buzz Rickson's Black MA-1 was born. While the official color for the MA-1, adopted by the US Air Force in the 1950s, was originally sage green, a genuine BLACK MA-1 with military-grade parts and materials based on mil-spec, but in black, does not exist in the world. For this reason, it was well-received and became a topic of conversation among users who preferred authentic items. Even if materials are specified to be black, the dyeing process differs depending on the material, and when assembled into a single jacket, subtle color differences emerge, clearly showing how many different materials a flight jacket is composed of.

Buzz Rickson's is a military brand of Toyo Enterprises, which also owns vintage American casual brands such as Sugar Cane and Sun Surf. The company has a long history with the military; its predecessor, Kosho Shokai, supplied items such as souvenir jackets (e.g., Sukajan) to US military bases. In 1993, the company released its first flight jacket. Since then, its sequentially reproduced military wear, much like Sun Surf's Hawaiian shirts and Sugar Cane's denim wear, are all perfectly crafted.
